Miners Cottage and Heritage Garden

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of the Miner's Cottage, a captivating piece of heritage nestled in the heart of Moonta Mines. Originally established as a museum by the local National Trust branch, this remarkable cottage stands as a testament to the countless miners who toiled tirelessly in the nearby Moonta, Yelta, Karkarilla, Parramatta, and Hamley Mines.

Constructed with a combination of hand-fired bricks and the traditional building technique known as "Wattle and Daub," the cottage showcases the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its era. Wattle and Daub, a composite material comprising woven wooden strips (wattle) coated with a sticky mixture of wet soil, clay, sand, and straw (daub), formed the very walls that have withstood the test of time. Surrounding the cottage is a meticulously maintained "cottage garden," a charming oasis that adds to the overall allure of the property.

Step inside the Miner's Cottage and be transported back to the late 1800s. Carefully curated to reflect the history and culture of its construction year, around 1870, the interior boasts authentic furnishings that capture the essence of the time. To enhance your experience, we invite you to join one of our knowledgeable volunteers on a guided tour, as they unveil captivating stories and provide valuable insights into the cottage's past. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting garden, where vibrant blooms and carefully selected plantings create a picturesque setting.
